Our right to retain documents

In some jurisdictions (including Northern Ireland) there are circumstances in which we will have the right to keep documents that belong to you even if you ask us to return or destroy them. In particular, this may occur if you have not paid all of our invoices.

Data protection legislation

As data processors, we are bound by the requirements of data protection legislation. We will ensure that data we receive from clients or other individuals during the course of our providing legal services will be kept securely and processed solely for the purposes of the engagement. For further information about how we process data we receive through users of this website, please see our Privacy Policy.

Anti-money laundering policies and procedures

Under anti-money laundering laws, we may need formal evidence of your identity before we can act, and may also conduct checks using external electronic databases for this purpose. Where individuals have supplied personal data for this purpose we will only use it for that purpose and will keep it only as long as the relevant AML and data protection legislation requires. We also conduct ongoing monitoring of existing clients.

We have internal procedures to ensure that any suspicions of money laundering are reported to the appropriate authorities where there is an obligation to do so. We may have to stop work on a matter and may not be allowed to tell you if we make such a report. We will not be liable to you for the consequences of any such report made in good faith. Lawyers and other relevant staff are provided with training on these issues.

Financial Services

Mills Selig is not authorised under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 but is able in certain circumstances to offer a limited range of investment services to clients because it is a member of the Law Society of Northern Ireland. The firm can provide these investment services if they are an incidental part of the professional services it has been engaged to provide.

Client Complaints Procedure

At all times, we aim to provide our clients with commercially focused legal advice of the highest quality. Any client who is unhappy about the advice and assistance it receives from us is entitled to complain. Should any problem arise, our approach is to be constructive. We take every complaint seriously, will investigate it promptly and thoroughly and will take remedial action as appropriate.

If you have a complaint, you should raise it in the first instance with your relationship director or the director responsible for the relevant matter. If that is felt to be inappropriate, or if you consider that the response of the relationship director or the director responsible for the matter is inadequate, you can write to our Complaints Director, John Kearns, at 21 Arthur Street, Belfast BT1 4GA. A copy of our full complaints procedure is available on request. We would expect to resolve any problem to your satisfaction. If we do not, you can contact the Law Society of Northern Ireland, who may be able to help you to resolve your complaint. The Society’s address is 96 Victoria Street, Belfast, BT1 3GN.
